Once an accountant and part-time washboard player, DJ Derek has been playing black and Caribbean music to audiences all over the country (and latterly, the world!) since the sixties. Along the way he’s become a reggae icon, influenced Massive Attack and (more recently) compiling his favourite tracks from the last 40 years for Trojan Records.
Count Skylarkin met Derek by chance at Glastonbury a some years back, asked him to play at The Zodiac for his clubnight’s second anniversary party, and his good-time reggae, ska, soul, dancehall and rhythm & blues work-outs (and Bristolian patois sermonising!) have been a regular fixture ever since.
