Rodney Smith aka Roots Manuva has been dubbed by The Independent as ‘the Doyen of British Rap’. Not only taking the UK hip-hop scene by storm, Roots is now also challenging American artists. Known for his socio-political lyrics and fearless writing, he is a supreme MC and one of the most compelling lyricists in the last two decades of British music, nominated for the prestigious MOBO Award for Best Hip Hop Act and Mercury Prize nomination for ‘Run Come Save Me’ in 2001. Mixing infectiously danceable hip hop, dub and electronica with reggae and gospel, his fascination with and love of soundsystem culture informs not just his music and lyrics but his whole attitude towards life and goes some way to explain his popularity both as an artist and an individual. Currently working on a new album, his sound is as fresh and fired up as ever in 2011.

Kanda Bongo Man returns to Fiesta! From the Congo returns the king of the highly infectious guitar-led soukous music, Kanda Bongo Man!! The man who single-handedly gave the world the infectious Kwasa Kwasa dance, Kanda is one of the most well known stars of world music, and one of the first pioneers of Soukous music. A regular at Womad, Glastonbury and international world music festivals, Kanda is a leading ambassador of African popular culture, and has toured the globe attracting huge audiences across five continents. He has recorded with Ringo Starr, with master guitarist Diblo Dibala, he has appeared on Jools Holland ‘Later …’ and was reputedly a favourite of John Peel. More recently he headlined at the Africa Calling event at the Eden Project, was invited to Kisumu in Kenya to celebrate Obama’s inauguration with the president’s grandmother, and wowed the crowds on the Radio 3 stage in WOMAD 2010. Kanda and his band and dancers delighted the crowd at last year’s first ever Fiesta – so we are delighted to invite him back! Expect a spectacular show and bring your dancing shoes!
