“as close to a perfect live band as you could hope to find… the best performance I’ve ever seen… a legendary night”
Nightshift, July 2005
Ska Cubano played one of their very first live shows to a sold-out Oxford Zodiac at Skylarkin’ on May 20th 2005, and still refer to it as one of the best shows they’ve ever played. Count Skylarkin, who worked tirelessly promoting the then little-known 11-piece, still thinks of it as the most perfect night of his professional life. DJ Derek referred to their performance onstage as the finest he’d seen.
“…the packed crowd twisted , swayed and shook (to) a sound that demanded dancing”
Straight No Chaser
Ska Cubano returned to Oxford to play to a sell-out 1,000 people at the newly refurbished Academy in February 2010. That night Count Skylarkin made a promise to bring them back before the end of the year, so that all the people crammed in at the back would have the chance to enjoy the band at closer quarters this time!
The group is the brainchild of the Londoner Natty Bo, lead singer of ska troupe The Topcats, legendary Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues DJ and an avid collector of 1940′s Cuban Mambo and Son. Contained within the group’s cross-Caribbean rhythms you’ll hear reggae, salsa, calypso, mento, afrobeat, Brazilian ritualistic music, Klezmer-style sax, big band brass and cumbia. Combined with exquisite musicianship and vaudevillian stage presence, Ska Cubano are the ultimate party band.
